While the first volume threw the reader into a wirlwind of complex characters and subplots, volume two offers a fair bit of down time for many of the characters with about one third of the pages consisting of flashbacks to several key points in Cephiro's history from the perspective of Clef, Zagato and others. We are also offered glimpses into what motivates the three invading worlds with the characters from Autozam getting the most focus and offering much needed depth to what appeared to be in the first volume, shallow characters.
Not only has the writing seemed to have improved (not that it was that bad in the first place), but the artwork seems alot fresher as well. The compositions, especially during the flashbacks are incredibly original and the special effects, even though black and white are remarkably effective especially when you consider how old this series is.
If you loved volume one, you have to get this. It builds on nicely to the Magic Knight Rayearth mythology and sets the stage for the suprising revelation filled final volume 3 which has ramifications for the entire CLAMP universe.
